Correspondence, accounts, legal papers and writings of John Sallé Clarke, Augustus Burfoot Clarke, and other members of the Clarke family. Most correspondence concerns John and Augustus's travels to Tennessee and Kentucky to visit relatives that had moved West, Augustus's school years at Virginia Baptist Seminary (now the University of Richmond) and Columbian College (now George Washington University) in Washington, D.C. Subjects include family affairs, courtship, teaching, Baptist beliefs, opinions on the education of women, and the status of African Americans after the Civil War.
